Living a low carb life but not sure what to do during those drive-thru days? These eye-opening tips will help you stay keto at fast food restaurants!
Have you ever found yourself at a fast food restaurant while on a diet? It can be so tough to order the salad while everyone else is enjoying burgers, fries and milkshakes. The keto diet, however, is a little bit different than traditional diets. You actually CAN enjoy fast food, you just need to learn a few simple swaps and adjustments!
Here are some ways you can stick to your keto diet at a fast food restaurant:
First step: forget the fries!
There, I said it. To be a keto-er, you’re going to have to forget the fries. BUT! There is a whole other world of tastes you experience while on a LCHF diet. Instead of thinking about what you CAN’T have, think instead of what you CAN have! Like a bunless bacon cheeseburger. Or a cobb salad with full fat dressing. How about a side of green beans with extra butter?
What fast food restaurants are keto-friendly?
With the exception of Taco Bell, almost all fast food restaurants offer some kind of low carb alternative, or you can improvise by ordering your sandwich or burrito in a lettuce wrap. More and more fast food restaurants are offering healthier alternatives to french fries as sides.
Keto foods to look for:
- Cheeseburgers (skip the bun)
- Chicken wings
- Cobb salads with full fat dressing like ranch, Caesar, or blue cheese (avoid croutons and sugary salad dressing)
- Green beans or turnip/collard greens as sides
- Breakfast menus–you can’t go wrong with bacon and eggs!
- Burrito bowls–avoid rice and beans
- Hibachi/stir fry without rice
- Grilled chicken or grilled nuggets
- Deconstructed sub sandwiches
- Hard boiled eggs
- Hot dogs (without the bun)
To summarize, you can eat pretty normally at fast food restaurants. Many restaurants offer bunless options for their burgers and sandwiches. Several restaurants have started offering green beans, turnip greens, or salads as sides in addition to fries. Full fat dressings and cheese allow you to enjoy salads more than on traditional diets.
Because the keto diet focuses on high fat foods, unlike traditional diets, it is completely possible to eat fast food while in ketosis and stick to your diet!
